Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas
This 2 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari from Kigali is the ultimate short-break adventure for anyone who wants to experience one of Africa's most profound wildlife encounters without spending weeks on the road. In just two days, you will travel from the heart of Kigali into the mist-draped Virunga Mountains and come within metres of habituated mountain gorilla families — a privilege that fewer than 100 people in the world share on any given day.
Your journey begins with a comfortable private transfer from Kigali, handled by our specialist team at Kigali Transfers to Bwindi, experts in gorilla trekking safaris across both Rwanda and Uganda. We drive you in a well-equipped 4×4 vehicle to the gateway town of Musanze (Ruhengeri), check you in at a carefully chosen lodge, and prepare you for the big day ahead.
On Day 2, you will enter Volcanoes National Park at first light, be assigned to a gorilla family group, and trek with experienced Rwanda Development Board (RDB) rangers and trackers through dense bamboo forest and volcanic slopes. Upon finding your gorilla family, you are granted one full, magical hour in their presence.
For travellers considering a longer or combined Uganda–Rwanda gorilla experience, our partners at Kenlink Tours offer outstanding 10-Day Rwanda & Uganda safari packages that combine gorilla trekking with wildlife and culture.

Day-by-Day Programme
Kigali → Musanze (Ruhengeri) — Arrival & Briefing
Your Rwanda gorilla adventure begins at your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport (KIA), where your professional driver-guide awaits with a comfortable, well-serviced 4×4 safari vehicle. After a warm welcome and a quick vehicle orientation, you head northwest out of the capital along the scenic Congo–Nile ridge road.
The drive to Musanze takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. As the city skyline gives way to rolling hills, terraced farmland, and eventually the dramatic silhouettes of the Virunga volcanoes, you will begin to feel the anticipation building. Keep your camera ready — the highland scenery alone is extraordinary.
Upon arrival in Musanze, you check in to your lodge — situated in the foothills of the Virungas with views towards the forested volcanic peaks. After freshening up, a light lunch is served. The afternoon is yours to relax or take an optional walk through the surrounding villages to learn about daily Rwandan highland life. In the early evening, your guide conducts a pre-trek briefing covering gorilla trekking regulations, what to expect on the trail, conservation background, and dos and don'ts during the gorilla encounter.
Dinner is served at the lodge. An early night is strongly recommended — tomorrow's trek begins at dawn. For those wishing to explore more of Rwanda's incredible biodiversity before or after this safari, Kenlink Tours' 3-Day Nyungwe Forest Tour makes an excellent extension.
Volcanoes National Park — Gorilla Trekking & Return to Kigali
Wake up to a hearty early breakfast before departing to the Kinigi Park Headquarters of Volcanoes National Park, arriving by 7:00 AM for registration and final briefing. Here you join the park rangers and your gorilla family group is announced — Rwanda's habituated gorilla families include the famous Susa, Amahoro, Agashya, and others, each with its own distinct personality and daily ranging patterns.
The trek into the park varies in duration from 30 minutes to 4–5 hours depending on the day's gorilla location, terrain, and weather. Your experienced RDB ranger-guides and trackers — who have already set out earlier to locate the family — lead you through bamboo thickets, alpine meadows, and volcanic ridgeline paths. Walking sticks and optional porter assistance are available at the trailhead.
When you find the gorillas, time simply stops. You spend one full hour with the family — watching silverbacks assert their authority, juveniles tumble and play, and mothers nurse their infants — all at arm's length. Photography is unrestricted (no flash), and your guide explains each gorilla's story and the remarkable conservation journey Rwanda has undertaken to protect them. Learn more about gorilla trekking safaris we facilitate across both Rwanda and Uganda.
After the trek, return to the trailhead where your driver and a packed lunch await. You receive your official gorilla trekking certificate — a treasured memento. The drive back to Kigali takes approximately 2.5 hours, with photo stops along the way. Your guide drops you at your Kigali hotel or the airport for onward travel.
For travellers who want to extend the adventure into Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, our Kigali to Bwindi gorilla transfer service connects seamlessly with this itinerary. Alternatively, explore Kenlink Tours' 4-Day Rwanda–Uganda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trek for a cross-border primate adventure.

Practical Information
Gorilla Permits
Rwanda gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance as availability is strictly limited to 8 people per gorilla family per day. We handle all permit bookings on your behalf. Contact us early to secure your preferred date. See our gorilla trekking safaris page for permit advice.
What to Wear & Pack
Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and sturdy waterproof hiking boots. Gardening gloves protect hands in dense vegetation. Pack a light rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small day backpack. A hat and gaiters are also recommended. Cameras are welcome — no flash.
Health & Fitness
Trekking fitness is moderate — you should be comfortable walking uphill on uneven terrain for 2–6 hours. No prior hiking experience is required. Guests with mobility concerns may request an "easier" family group allocation. Gorilla trekking is not permitted for anyone with active cold or flu symptoms to protect the gorillas from human disease.
Our Safari Vehicles
We operate a fleet of well-maintained 4×4 safari vehicles, minivans, and Land Cruiser jeeps — all ideal for Rwanda's highland roads. View our full vehicle fleet and select the best option for your group size. Private vehicle hire is also available via our car hire & self-drive service.
Best Time to Visit
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is possible year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions and clearer highland views. The wet seasons bring lush forest scenery and fewer crowds, with gorillas often found at lower altitudes. See our travel guide for seasonal advice.
Getting to Kigali
Kigali International Airport (KIA) is well-connected to major African hubs and European cities via RwandAir, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and others. Our team offers seamless airport transfer services from KIA to your Kigali hotel and onward to Volcanoes National Park. We can also arrange Rwanda safari extensions through Kenlink Tours.
