3 Days Gorilla Trekking Uganda Starting from Rwanda

Kigali Transfers to Bwindi > 3 Days Gorilla Trekking Uganda Starting from Rwanda
Tour Overview
Track Mountain Gorillas from Kigali

Designed for travellers based in Kigali, Rwanda, this 3-day safari crosses into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site sheltering more than half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Pick & Transfer handles all logistics end-to-end, so you focus entirely on the experience.

The centrepiece is Day 2: a one-hour encounter with a habituated gorilla family in one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Day 3 returns you to Kigali comfortably, completing a self-contained adventure that fits cleanly into any international itinerary.

In Uganda, the road descends through the dramatic Kisoro highland landscape — five Virunga volcanoes filling the horizon — before climbing toward the Bwindi forest area. Arrive at the lodge in late afternoon for check-in, dinner, and an optional guide briefing on tomorrow's trek.

Day 2 — The Main Event
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Early breakfast then transfer to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point by 7:30 AM. Rangers assign groups of eight to specific habituated gorilla families and lead the trek into Bwindi's ancient, root-tangled rainforest. Trek time varies from 30 minutes to six hours depending on the family's location.

The one-hour gorilla encounter is the emotional heart of this journey — silverbacks at rest metres away, nursing mothers, juveniles swinging through the undergrowth. Nothing in safari travel quite prepares you for it. Return to the lodge for a hot lunch, a free afternoon, and dinner.

  • Early breakfast and transfer to UWA briefing point
  • 7:30 AM ranger briefing and group assignment
  • Trek into Bwindi — follow trackers to gorilla family
  • One full hour with the habituated gorilla family
  • Return to lodge for hot lunch and afternoon rest
  • Optional: community village walk in the afternoon
  • Dinner and overnight at Bwindi lodge

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked
Do I need a Uganda visa if I'm travelling from Rwanda?
+
Yes — most nationalities require a Uganda tourist visa. Apply online via the Uganda eVisa portal before departure, or obtain one on arrival at the Cyanika border post. The East African Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya in a single visa and is the best value if you have already entered Rwanda. Your guide will advise on requirements for your specific nationality.
How physically demanding is the gorilla trek in Bwindi?
+
Bwindi is rated moderate to strenuous — steeper and more root-tangled than Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Treks can take 30 minutes to 6 hours each way. A reasonable fitness level is recommended. Porters (approx. USD 15) are available at the park to carry your daypack and provide physical support on steep sections — highly recommended for less confident walkers.
How far is the drive from Kigali to Bwindi?
+
Approximately 340 km — a 5 to 7-hour drive including the Cyanika border crossing. The route passes through Musanze (Rwanda), over the Cyanika mountain pass, through Kisoro (Uganda), and up to the Bwindi forest area. It's a beautiful, scenic journey through volcanic highlands — an early start on Day 1 ensures a comfortable afternoon arrival at the lodge.
When is the best time to do this safari?
+
Gorilla trekking operates year-round. The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable trail conditions in Bwindi, with firmer ground and less mud. The wet seasons (March–May, October–November) bring a lush, dramatic atmosphere and fewer crowds, but muddier trails. The gorilla encounter itself is equally extraordinary in any month.
Is this a private safari or a shared group tour?
+
All Pick & Transfer safaris are fully private — your vehicle, your guide, your pace. The gorilla trekking group of up to 8 people is assembled by the Uganda Wildlife Authority on the day from permit holders at different lodges, but every other element of your tour is exclusively yours.
