Day by Day
Your Detailed Itinerary
Kigali Departure & Nyungwe Arrival
Your driver-guide will collect you from yourKigali hotel in the early morning for a scenic 5–6 hour drive south-westward through Rwanda's famous "thousand hills." Pass tea plantations, rolling terraced farmland, and dramatic highland scenery before arriving at Nyungwe National Park — one of Africa's oldest rainforests, estimated to be over 70,000 years old.
After checking in to your forest lodge, the afternoon is free to enjoy the forest atmosphere. Your guide will brief you on the following day's chimpanzee trek and safety guidelines.
Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk
Rise early for your chimpanzee tracking experience in Nyungwe. Accompanied by expert guides and trackers, you'll venture into the dense forest in search of habituated chimp groups. Nyungwe is home to over 500 chimpanzees and is widely regarded as one of the best places in Africa to observe them in the wild.
After the morning trek and a well-earned lunch, the afternoon brings another highlight: the iconic Igishigishigi Canopy Walk — a suspended walkway stretching above the treetops, offering breathtaking views of the forest below and, on clear days, all the way to the Congo hills. This is a rare chance to observe forest birds and colobus monkeys from a bird's-eye perspective.
Return to your lodge as the mist rolls in over the treetops — a truly magical end to a remarkable day. This experience is also available through our partners at Kenlink Tours.
Transfer to Bwindi via Cyanika Border
After breakfast, depart Nyungwe for the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Your experienced driver will guide you through the Cyanika / Kisoro border crossing with full assistance on both the Rwandan and Ugandan sides, making what can be a complex crossing feel completely effortless.
Continue through the stunning volcanic landscape of southwestern Uganda, with views of the Virunga Volcanoes accompanying your route. Arrive in Bwindi in the late afternoon and check into your forest camp or lodge — many perched dramatically above the forest canopy.
Your guide will hold a detailed briefing for the gorilla trekking experience ahead, covering what to expect, conservation guidelines, and photography tips. The evening is yours to enjoy the remarkable ambiance of one of Africa's most celebrated wild places. Learn more about our border crossing services or view the Kenlink Tours Bwindi packages for additional options.
Gorilla Trekking & Return to Kigali
The pinnacle of your entire journey. After an early breakfast, set out with your gorilla trekking permit and expert guide into the Impenetrable Forest. The trek can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family's location — the effort is always richly rewarded.
Upon finding a habituated mountain gorilla family, you will be granted one precious hour in their presence — observing silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles in their natural habitat. This is an encounter that travellers describe as life-changing, and one of the rarest wildlife experiences on Earth. Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain in the wild.
After the trek, enjoy a celebratory lunch and begin the return drive to Kigali, re-crossing the border with our full assistance. Arrive in Kigali in the early evening with memories that will last a lifetime. Contact our team to book your permits well in advance — they are limited and sell out months ahead.
