Chimpanzee Trekking Nyungwe. If you have ever dreamed of coming face to face with one of our closest relatives in the wild, Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda is a destination that will exceed every expectation. Draped across ancient volcanic mountains and stretching over 1,000 square kilometres, Nyungwe is one of the oldest montane rainforests in Africa — and it is home to one of the continent’s most rewarding chimpanzee trekking experiences. Whether you are planning a dedicated primate safari or weaving Nyungwe into a broader Rwanda and Uganda itinerary, chimpanzee trekking here is a truly unforgettable encounter.

At Kigali Transfers to Bwindi, we specialise in getting travellers smoothly and comfortably from Kigali to the great primate destinations of East Africa — and Nyungwe is one we champion deeply. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

Why Nyungwe Forest Is Special

Nyungwe is not simply a forest — it is a living cathedral. The park contains 13 primate species, over 300 bird species, and more than 1,000 plant species, making it one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the African continent. Of all the wildlife here, chimpanzees hold a special place. Nyungwe hosts a habituated chimpanzee community, meaning these primates have been gradually accustomed to the presence of human visitors over years of careful conservation work. This process of habituation is what makes the trekking experience so intimate and extraordinary — you are not watching chimps from a distance; you are walking among them.

The chimpanzees here share approximately 98.7% of their DNA with humans, and spending an hour in their presence is a humbling, joyful, and thought-provoking experience that few other wildlife encounters on Earth can match. You will observe their social hierarchies, their playfulness, the tenderness between mothers and infants, and their astonishing problem-solving intelligence. It is the kind of experience that changes how you think about nature — and about yourself.

What to Expect on a Chimpanzee Trek

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe begins early — very early. Trackers set out before dawn to locate the chimp community, and trekkers typically meet at the park headquarters by around 5:00 AM. After a briefing on conservation rules and safety guidelines, you head into the forest guided by experienced park rangers and trackers. The terrain can be steep and dense, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, though the trail is accessible to most healthy adults.

Once the chimps are located, you are given a maximum of one hour with the group — a rule designed to minimise stress on the animals and protect their long-term wellbeing. In that hour, you may witness anything from grooming sessions and territorial calls to aerial acrobatics through the high canopy. It is raw, real, and remarkable. Cameras are welcome, though flash photography is not permitted.

Beyond chimpanzees, Nyungwe’s trails open up a wider primate world. The park is home to Angola colobus monkeys — often seen in troops of hundreds, one of the largest colobus gatherings anywhere in Africa — as well as L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and more. Many trekkers combine their chimp permit with a colobus monkey trek on the same or following day.

The Canopy Walkway — A Highlight Not to Miss

One of the most iconic experiences in Nyungwe is the canopy walkway. Suspended 50 metres above the forest floor and stretching 200 metres across a deep valley, this hanging bridge gives visitors a bird’s-eye view of the canopy — literally at the level where many of the forest’s primates and birds spend their lives. It is an extraordinary perspective that transforms your understanding of this vertical forest world.

The walkway is one of the few of its kind in Africa, and it makes Nyungwe trekking a multi-sensory adventure. Morning is the best time to visit — mist hangs in the valley below, sunlight filters through the canopy, and the forest hums with birdsong. Even travellers with a mild fear of heights find that the awe of the views quickly overtakes any nervousness.

If you are planning a dedicated Nyungwe experience, our partners at Kenlink Tours offer an excellent 3-Day Nyungwe Forest National Park Tour that combines chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway, and a visit to the surrounding region — including Lake Kivu — in a beautifully paced itinerary.

Getting to Nyungwe from Kigali

Nyungwe Forest National Park lies approximately 225 kilometres southwest of Kigali, making it reachable in around 4 to 5 hours by road. The journey itself is beautiful — passing through rolling green hills, tea plantations, and cultural landmarks including the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza and the Ethnographic Museum in Huye. Many travellers choose to stop at these sites along the way, turning the transfer into part of the experience.

This is exactly where Kigali Transfers to Bwindi comes in. We provide private, comfortable, and professional road transfers from Kigali to Nyungwe and beyond. Our well-maintained safari vehicles — from Land Cruiser jeeps to safari vans — ensure that you arrive relaxed, on time, and ready to trek. You can view our full fleet and book your transfer through our Our Fleet page.

For travellers who want to combine Nyungwe with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, we offer seamless cross-border transfers that connect both experiences in one smooth itinerary — check out our Gorilla Trekking Safaris page for options. Our Nyungwe and Bwindi Tour is particularly popular for travellers who want the very best of both Rwanda and Uganda in a single trip.

When Is the Best Time to Trek in Nyungwe?

Nyungwe can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons — from June to September and from December to February — offer the most comfortable trekking conditions. Trails are less muddy, the forest paths are easier to navigate, and wildlife activity tends to be more visible as animals move through more open areas of the canopy. That said, Nyungwe’s mist and occasional rainfall add to its mystical atmosphere, and many travellers find wet-season treks equally magical — the forest is greener, more dramatic, and you are likely to have fewer fellow trekkers on the trail.

Regardless of when you visit, it is important to book your chimpanzee trekking permit well in advance, particularly during peak season. Rwanda Development Board issues a limited number of permits daily to protect the chimps and ensure the quality of the experience. We recommend booking your permit at least three months ahead during the June–September high season.

Combining Nyungwe with a Broader East Africa Safari

One of the great advantages of Nyungwe’s location is how naturally it fits into a wider East Africa itinerary. Kigali is well-connected by international flights, making Rwanda an excellent entry point for primate safaris spanning both Rwanda and Uganda. From Nyungwe, travellers can continue to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, or cross the border into Uganda for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest or gorilla trekking in Bwindi.

Kenlink Tours, one of East Africa’s most experienced safari specialists, offers a beautifully designed 6-Day Rwanda Adventures — Gorilla, Chimpanzee, and Lake Kivu safari that takes in the highlights of Nyungwe and Rwanda’s primate world in one seamless package. For those seeking a longer adventure combining both countries, their 10-Day Rwanda and Uganda Safari is a consistently praised itinerary that delivers both gorilla and chimpanzee encounters across some of the continent’s finest national parks.

For travellers focused purely on primates, the 3-Day Chimp Tracking Safari to Kibale National Park by Kenlink Tours is another excellent option that can be added onto a Nyungwe visit for a comprehensive primate safari experience across both Rwanda and Uganda.

What to Bring on Your Chimpanzee Trek

Preparation makes all the difference in the forest. Here is what experienced trekkers recommend: long-sleeved shirts and long trousers (both for protection against insects and as a sign of respect near the animals), sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, a lightweight rain jacket, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation on steep sections, insect repellent, sunscreen, at least two litres of water, snacks, and a camera with a good zoom lens. Leave strong perfumes and colognes behind — scents can disturb the chimps.

A walking stick is often available at the trailhead and is well worth using, particularly on descent through wet terrain.
